Individual

Body mass index (BMI) is an estimation of your body fat. It is a common tool used to determine an individual’s weight category, which in turn, can be used to predict the risk of developing lifestyle-related illnesses and medical conditions. As BMI increases, the risk of developing some diseases, including hypertension, diabetes mellitus type 2 – as well as their consequences such as stroke and coronary artery disease – may also increase.

It should be emphasized, however, that BMI is only a way to measure your weight category, and should not be used for diagnosing the current state of health of the individual. While it can help determine if you are underweight, normal, overweight, or obese, it does not take in consideration age, gender, and muscle mass, and it does not differentiate lean body mass from fat mass. To accurately determine your health condition and risk for diseases, you may need to consult with your physician, who would examine your health history and exercise patterns, as well as measure your body fat percentage.
